BONE HEALTH
Step workouts are great low-impact exercises that can really help with bone health, especially for us aging ladies and those nearing menopause. Studies show that sticking to step training can boost bone metabolism, which is all about forming new bone, particularly in postmenopausal women.
One study found that after six months of step workouts, premenopausal individuals saw a bigger increase in bone density compared to those doing resistance training. So, adding step workouts to your fitness routine could really support your bone health.
MENTAL/COGNITIVE HEALTH
Step workouts require a good amount of focus, especially if you're following a video at home or joining a class at your local community center. If you're not paying attention, you might miss the next move or even trip. This kind of mental engagement can really benefit your cognitive health.
Research has shown that doing specific choreographed movements, like those in step and dance classes, can enhance your mental abilities. Step workouts involve these choreographed moves set to music. Plus, many studies suggest that exercise overall can improve working memory, cognitive flexibility, and more.
LIVING LONGER
Research indicates that people who walk around 8,000 steps a day have a 50% lower risk of dying from any cause, while those hitting 12,000 steps daily see a 65% drop in mortality risk compared to those only walking 4,000 steps. Higher step counts are also linked to lower death rates from cancer and heart disease.
BALANCE
As we age, the chances of falling increase, especially if balance and lower body strength are lacking. Step workouts can help reduce this risk.
A study found that a progressive step marching exercise program was effective for improving balance in older adults. This program not only boosted balance and lower body strength but also enhanced overall quality of life and reduced the fear of falling.

(A little about me: I've been teaching group fitness for over 15 years. I opened a fitness studio that is still thriving (I sold it to a friend 2 years ago). I'm a recent nursing graduate, a stay-at-home mom of four, and believe it or not, I'm aging every day. I'm excited to share my knowledge and passion for new workout classes that help those over 40 feel vibrant and healthy again!)
